Does Windows 11 have a break reminder?

Short answer: not a real one. Windows 11 has no setting that reminds you to get up and stretch. The closest built-in option is Focus sessions in the Clock app, which can schedule short breaks inside a work session.

Option 1: Focus sessions in the Clock app (built in, free)

Focus sessions are a Pomodoro-style timer inside the Windows 11 Clock app. You choose how long you want to work, and Windows splits longer sessions into focus periods with short breaks in between.

  1. Open the Start menu, type Clock and open the Clock app. It opens on the Focus sessions tab.
  2. Set a session length. You can choose from 15 to 240 minutes in 15-minute steps.
  3. Leave Skip breaks unticked. Sessions longer than 30 minutes then include 5-minute breaks spread through the session.
  4. Click Start focus session. Windows plays a sound and shows a notification when each break starts and ends.
The catch: Focus sessions only run when you start one, they also turn on Do Not Disturb, and the break is just a notification. Nothing tells you to stand up or shows you what to do, so it's easy to dismiss and keep working.

Option 2: A recurring alarm (built in, free)

In the same Clock app you can add alarms. Some people set an hourly alarm as a "get up" reminder. It works, but you need one alarm per hour, and alarms are easy to snooze without moving.

Option 3: A break reminder app

A break reminder app runs in the background all day without you starting it. At your chosen interval it opens a break, then schedules the next one. That is what makes the habit stick.

Several exist for Windows, from free open-source timers to apps with guided exercises. We compare the main ones in Best break reminder apps for Windows.

Our own app, BreakReminder, adds one thing most timers don't: each break plays a 1–2 minute follow-along stretch video with captions, so you know exactly what to do. It runs in the system tray, works offline, and can start with Windows.

If you only need a nudge for a few hours of deep work, Focus sessions are fine. If you sit at your PC most of the day and want breaks to actually happen, a break reminder app is the better fit.

Questions

Does Windows 11 have a stretch reminder?

No. Windows 11 has no built-in stretch or posture reminder. Focus sessions in the Clock app can schedule breaks, but they don't suggest stretches or show you what to do.

Does Windows 10 have Focus sessions?

No. Focus sessions in the Clock app are a Windows 11 feature. On Windows 10 your options are Clock app alarms or a break reminder app.

How often should I take a break from the computer?

A common rule of thumb is a short movement break every 30 to 60 minutes, plus eye breaks such as the 20-20-20 rule. Pick an interval you will actually follow.

Do Focus sessions run in the background?

A session keeps running while you use other apps, but you have to start each one yourself, and it turns on Do Not Disturb while it runs.
